Saving Grace, Table Reads, and Breaking the ice
After posting my last update I was getting concerned the project might end up dead in the water. After having trouble finding actors to fill three leading roles I started to get desperate. I reached out to anyone I could think of that might know actors. And tried calling in a few favors. However, last month I had the pleasure of seeing Twisted at a local theater here in Austin. I am a big fan of the writer of Twisted and was excited to see it live. The show had many talented people in it.
I reached out to the director of the show and Grace Stevens seemingly turned the tables overnight. The next day I had many more applicants than I needed. I was able to audition most of them virtually. At this time I haven’t fully signed any of those roles needed but have interested parties. Again it comes down to the difficult decision on who truly is right for the part. But I am so grateful to Grace.
Even though some roles were still pending I decided to have a table read so I could hear what the script sounds like being read out loud. The signed cast was there as well as a few of the above mentioned hopefuls filling in possibly temporarily. Things went great and most importantly I could hear the chemistry amongst all the DINKs. We laughed, some of us cried, but I think all of us really enjoyed how the story turned out.
Yesterday we filmed a short commercial that we will use to post on socials and start drumming up an audience. With this being a musical podcast it was very hard determining how to make a video commercial for an all audio production. Our guy Khary however knows what he is doing. The shoot went amazing and I can’t wait to see the final product and share it with the world.
In addition to the commercial we had the studio for another 3 hours and decided we might as well break the ice. Chloe (playing Becca) and Cole (playing Mason) volunteered as lab rats and we were able to record a scene and a full song. It was a huge learning experience and will be very helpful when we start recording at our home studio of Space ATX.
Finally, this whole weekend has been a very surreal experience. Hearing the script and the songs out loud and watching the casts reaction to the story in real time has made this project so much more real. These are no longer imaginary characters and words in my head. But a real story that garnered a positive reaction. I just love telling stories and I am so grateful I get to be typing this update. The snowball has started rolling thanks to everyone’s help.
More updates to come!
